Bob Stroud, Kevin Matthews on 2022 Radio Hall of Fame ballot

Bob Stroud and Kevin Matthews

Chicago radio veterans Bob Stroud and Kevin Matthews are among 24 nominees for induction to the Radio Hall of Fame, the Chicago-based shrine to radio's greatest performers and programs announced Monday.

Stroud, who’s on the ballot for the third time, disclosed last week he was stepping down as top-rated midday personality at WDRV 97.1-FM, the Hubbard Radio classic rock station where he’s spent the last 21 of his 43 years in radio.

Matthews, a first-time nominee, spent 18 years on Chicago radio, including a 12-year run as a mainstay of the former WLUP AM and FM. Since 2008, when he was diagnosed with a rare type of multiple sclerosis, Matthews has been living in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Radio Hall of Fame

A revision in the Radio Hall of Fame’s rules this year eliminated public participation in the voting process and specific categories for various inductees. Instead six winners will be chosen from among the list of 24 nominees by a panel of industry professionals. An additional two winners will be selected by the Hall of Fame nominating committee.

“The 2022 list of nominees for induction to the Radio Hall of Fame this year represents some of the most talented individuals in the history of our medium,” said co-chairman Dennis Green. “This year’s nominees made their mark in a variety of formats from coast-to-coast and town-to-town up and down the dial. All 24 nominees are deserving of Hall of Fame recognition.

“These amazing radio stars help make radio special to millions of listeners and pave the way for future Hall of Fame talent.”

The Radio Hall of Fame has been housed at Chicago's Museum of Broadcast Communications since 1991. This year’s winners will be announced July 25 and inducted at a ceremony in Chicago November 1.

Monday’s comment of the day: Woody Mosgers: It's the best story of a really good guy finishing first. I've been acquainted with Bob [Stroud] since The Drive first started with Jerry Schnacke as the GM and I was the marketing director for the Regional Transportation Authority and they were trying to sell me on the new format. I had the great opportunity to see and hear Bob with the Cryan' Shames and with his "big band" and with some food and wine events. He has more encyclopedic music knowledge than anyone I've ever heard, and while I'll still get to wake up to "10 at 10" out here on the left coast it just won't be the same. Bob, thanks for all the tunes and entertainment.
