WFMT’s radio rookie scores morning-drive job in San Francisco

Maggie Clennon Reberg

Maggie Clennon Reberg landed her first radio gig in 2015 after she filled out an online application in response to an open call at WFMT 98.7-FM, the Window to the World Communications classical music station.

Now she's headed for San Francisco — the nation's sixth biggest media market — where she will host weekday mornings on KDFC, the noncommercial classical station owned by the University of Southern California.

It's been a meteoric rise for Reberg, who gained notice first as a part-time and overnight announcer at WFMT and more recently as host of weekend mornings, including the popular "Saturday Morning Listeners' Choice" and "Soundtrack" programs.

Reberg, a Detroit native who moved to Chicago in 1993, spent most of her career pursuing acting, singing and dancing professionally. She has performed with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music Theatre Works, Chamber Opera Chicago, Transgressive Theatre-Opera, Remy Bumppo and First Folio Theatre, as well as in international tours of the Broadway musical "Sister Act."

Landing her first-ever radio job with WFMT, she once recalled, "felt like kind of a homecoming because both of my parents are from the Chicago area. As a music-loving Chicagoan and devoted listener, WFMT has been a huge part of my life for so many years.

“Music is the central driving force in my life and I consider our listeners like a big circle of friends, and I’m just like them. I have a job and a mortgage and a child, and music is my solace.”

Tuesday’s comment of the day: Mark Quinn: Dave Kerner nailed it: Dave Marsett is indeed the very embodiment of “one of our steady, professional and enduring voices” that make WBBM such a great and indispensable source of news. Thanks for helping to keep us news junkies informed over the years, Dave. On another note, I am floored to learn that Mr. Marsett is 74; he sounds so youthful on the air! Godspeed to Mr. Marsett; I wish him nothing but the best.
