Meagan Fitzgerald joins NBC News Chicago bureau as correspondent

Meagan Fitzgerald

Meagan Fitzgerald, weekend morning news anchor at the NBC-owned station in Washington, D.C., has been named Chicago-based correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC.

“A heartfelt and sincere honor,” Fitzgerald tweeted today shortly after her hiring was announced by David Verdi,  NBC News senior vice president of worldwide news gathering. “I’m very excited and grateful to join this team!”

A graduate of Howard University, Fitzgerald joined NBC-owned WRC in Washington as a reporter and fill-in anchor in 2015. She was promoted to weekend morning anchor in 2019. She previously worked for KUSA, the NBC affiliate in Denver, and KTVE, the NBC affiliate licensed to El Dorado, Arkansas, and serving West Monroe, Louisiana.

At Howard University she played for the women's lacrosse team for four years, and later served as head coach of the women's lacrosse team at the University of San Diego.

Fitzgerald made headlines in June 2019 when she announced her engagement on the air to her girlfriend, Kelly Heath, at the start of Pride Month.

“I just felt like it was natural,” she later said. “People tune in to watch every morning; they’re our family and we’re theirs. And because it’s Pride month, I didn’t want to just make it about me. I want to help other people know that being different is OK.”

Fitzgerald also is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Association of Black Journalists.
