Chicago radio ratings: Cubs light up The Score at night

Despite losing to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central tiebreaker game Monday, the Chicago Cubs came up a big winner for radio flagship on WSCR 670-AM.

Thanks largely to Cubs broadcasts, the Entercom sports/talk station finished first at night in ratings from mid-August to mid-September. The Score was up overall, posting its highest audience share since October 2017.

Chicago White Sox broadcasts on WGN 720-AM weren’t nearly so helpful to the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station, which posted only a modest increase in the latest Nielsen Audio survey.

WVAZ 102.7-FM, the iHeartMedia urban adult contemporary station, again was No. 1 overall. Close behind was Cumulus Media classic hits WLS 94.7-FM, which tied its highest share ever.

The biggest surprise was the downturn for perennial leader WTMX 101.9-FM. The Hubbard Radio hot adult-contemporary station’s morning show, hosted by Eric Ferguson, Melissa McGurren and Brian “Whip” Paruch, dropped to second place in the overall rankings and second among listeners between 25 and 54 — the key money demographic long dominated by The Mix.

Capturing first place in mornings was Entercom all-news combo WBBM 780-AM and WCFS 105.9-FM, anchored by Felicia Middlebrooks and Pat Cassidy. Winning the 25-to-54 demo were Raúl Molinar, Carla Medrano and Andrés Maldonado of Univision regional Mexican WOJO 105.1-FM.

The Nielsen Audio survey ran from August 16 to September 12.

Monday’s comment of the day: Burt Levy: Congrats to Mary Kay Kleist, she does a great job, well deserved. I do hope, however, that [news director] Jeff Harris has a plan for Megan Glaros beyond the morning weather. She is probably CBS Chicago's most talented asset, and she markets and promotes the station better than any marketing director ever has. Her work on social media on behalf of the CBS Chicago brand is tremendous. Her live show with Marissa Baily on Instagram is a revenue-generating opportunity waiting to happen.
