Dan Mihalopoulos, who’s been a star investigative journalist for two Chicago newspapers, is joining WBEZ 91.5-FM, the Chicago Public Media station announced Friday.

Mihalopoulos, who most recently has been an investigative reporter and weekly political columnist for the Sun-Times, will report on politics and government for the public radio station, starting May 28.

“Over the last two decades, Dan has established a reputation as not only one of the finest political and investigative reporters, but also as one of the most respected and admired colleagues in our profession,” Steve Edwards, vice president and chief content officer at WBEZ, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have him on board to further our commitment to original reporting and to providing essential insights on the topics and issues that matter to our community.”

Sun-Times editor-in-chief Chris Fusco said Mihalopoulos’s byline would still be welcome in the paper.

“Dan’s journalism at the Sun-Times has won the respect of his newsroom colleagues and everyday Chicagoans because of his tireless work ethic, willingness to take on difficult stories and razor-sharp reporting chops,” Fusco said. “We know he’s a team player, and we’re hopeful we can continue to collaborate with him in his new role at WBEZ.”

Before joining the Sun-Times in 2012, Mihalopoulos was a reporter for the Chicago News Cooperative and the Chicago Tribune, where he covered City Hall and other beats for 10 years.

At WBEZ he’ll work with another former Sun-Times political reporter, Dave McKinney.

“As a longtime listener and frequent guest on the station’s programs, I’m excited to join WBEZ’s growing effort to provide intelligent, in-depth coverage of the important issues facing the city,” Mihalopoulos said Friday. “I look forward to being part of one of Chicago’s most impactful news teams and to building on what I’ve been doing with the Sun-Times over the past six years.”

A Chicago native and journalism graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mihalopoulos began his career as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
