Richard Maginn, a highly respected former executive producer of the 10 p.m. Monday-through-Friday newscast at ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7, has been hired as managing editor at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Richard’s local experience join our team,” Frank Whittaker, station manager and vice president of news at NBC 5, said in announcing Maginn’s appointment to the newly created position Wednesday.

Starting June 22, Maginn will oversee all aspects of newsgathering, including daily coverage and major events, work with reporters in the field, and drive convergence with digital platforms and Telemundo Chicago sister station WSNS-Channel 44.

Maginn resigned from ABC 7 in May of 2014 after 19 years, including 14 years as executive producer of the top-rated 10 p.m. newscast and the station’s coverage of major news events. Earlier he produced the 10 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and weekend newscasts there.

A graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism at University of Missouri, he previously worked as a producer and executive producer at stations in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, Peoria, Illinois and Monterey, California.

Creation of the managing editor position was part of an expansion of the news management team at the NBC 5. Before the management restructuring, the title of managing editor had been held by the assignment manager. The new managing editor position is more strategically focused.
