They’re rolling out the welcome mat at WMAQ-Channel 5 for Katie Kim, just in from KRQE-TV, the CBS affiliate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Kim joins the NBC-owned station as a general assignment reporter effective October 20, according to Frank Whittaker, station manager and vice president of news at NBC 5.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to live and work in such an amazing city!” Kim posted on Facebook, as she moves up from the No. 47 market to No. 3. On Twitter, she wrote: “After 4 incredible yrs in NM, I'm leaving humbled & grateful for a new job in Chicago. I'll cherish my time here. Thank you for your trust.”

A southern California native and 2009 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Southern California (with degrees in broadcast journalism and art history), she began as a reporter for WILX-TV, the NBC affiliate in Lansing, Michigan, before joining WRQE in 2010. Her work also appeared on KASA-TV, the Fox affiliate in Albuquerque.

As part of the station’s investigative team, Kim’s online bio said: “She asks the tough, uncomfortable questions that those in power often don’t want to answer.”
