Former Cubs infielder Ron Coomer will succeed Keith Moreland in the Cubs radio booth alongside play-by-play announcer Pat Hughes, sources confirmed Thursday.

Coomer agreed to a two-year contract as color analyst to be announced Friday by the Cubs and WGN AM 720. A Chicago area native who played for the Cubs in 2001, Coomer, 47, most recently worked on Minnesota Twins' pre- and post-game shows for Fox Sports North.

As reported here last week, bosses of the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station had narrowed their search to Coomer and another former Cub-turned-broadcaster, Todd Hollandsworth, who works for MLB Network Radio and Cubs' pre- and post-game shows on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Moreland, who succeeded the late Ron Santo as Hughes’ radio partner in 2011, announced he would not return next year, citing a desire to spend more time with his family in Texas.
