I know it sounds like a punchline, but it's true: Fox 32 News is replacing Bob Sirott with some guy from Wichita.

After three years as 9 p.m. weekday news anchor, the veteran Chicago broadcaster will sign off from Fox-owned WFLD-Channel 32 on Sept. 3.

The move paves the way for Sirott and his wife, Marianne Murciano, to work full time for WGN AM 720. Last month the couple joined the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station with plans to co-host a midday or afternoon show, starting in early September.

"I'm excited to be joining Tribune Broadcasting full time," Sirott told me Monday. "I'm grateful to Fox TV executives for the terrific opportunity they gave me three years ago to anchor the 9 p.m. news with Robin Robinson. The chance to work for Larry Wert and Jimmy deCastro's new teams at WGN was just too good to pass up."

Starting Oct. 1, Jeff Herndon will join Fox 32 as 9 p.m. co-anchor from KAKE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas, where he's anchored news for 12 years. The graduate of Wichita State University previously was sports anchor at KTKA-TV in Topeka, Kansas.

“Jeff is an outstanding communicator and journalist with a proven track record of excellence," Fox 32 news director Tom Doerr said in a statement released to TVSpy. "He is a leader and sought after journalist and we are excited to welcome him to this role at Fox 32.”

It wasn't entirely clear from the announcement whether Robinson would still be onboard when Herndon debuts. Her contract, which was to have expired this month, has been extended through September.
