Check out Tom Skilling’s weather page on the Chicago Tribune website and you’ll find today’s forecast under the byline of the chief meteorologist for Tribune Broadcasting WGN-Channel 9. But you won’t find Tom Skilling in the video that appears above it.
Instead, there’s Steve Baskerville, meteorologist for CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2.
When I asked Skilling about it Thursday, he seemed as dumbfounded as I over why the Tribune would highlight another station’s weatherman above Skilling’s own forecast. “That is a bit peculiar, isn’t it?” he said. “You kind of wonder what the thought process with that was.”
A Tribune representative called the matter “a licensing issue,” adding in a statement: “We’re working with WGN to find a solution so that we can use Tom Skilling videos. But until we sort things out, we want to continue to be able to share video content with readers, and will do so using video which we have licensed.”
Paul Rennie, president and general manager of WGN, said: “We’re working to solve the issue. We have different video platforms and we’re trying to find a solution.”
