The U drops ‘You & Me’ morning hosts; new show planned

Melissa Forman and Jeanne Sparrow

It’s over and out for Jeanne and Melissa on “You & Me.”

Thursday turned out to be the last day on the air for Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman as hosts of “You & Me,” the locally produced talk-and-entertainment show airing from 6 to 8 a.m. weekdays on Weigel Broadcasting WCIU-Channel 26.

Steve Farber, senior vice president of operations for Weigel Broadcasting, said in a statement: “Jeanne and Melissa are true professionals. They helped WCIU significantly grow our local programming presence in recent years. We thank them for their hard work.”

While the timing of Thursday’s move came as a surprise to the show’s staff and station employees, the decision was not unexpected. Low ratings have plagued “You & Me” since its inception in October 2009, with no improvement in sight.

In the February sweep that ended Wednesday, the two-hour show averaged a scant 0.2 rating (or 6,926 households) and 1.0 percent audience share, according to Nielsen figures. Among advertiser-targeted viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the show had a 0.1 rating and 0.8 share.

Plans are in the works for a replacement on The U, but no start date has been set. Details on the new morning program will be unveiled later this spring, according to the station’s announcement Thursday.

In the interim, Jon Hansen, the show’s social media coordinator and on-air correspondent, will host “You & Me” with a mix of rotating guest co-hosts.

Sparrow and Forman were both veterans of Chicago radio when they launched the show, originally titled "You & Me This Morning," as an alternative to local newscasts on competing stations. It was expanded from two hours to three in 2014 and then cut back to two hours last May.
