Following a high-decibel eruption with his bosses, Chicago radio personality Dan McNeil was missing Friday from the morning show he co-hosts with Pete McMurray on Hubbard Radio classic hits WDRV FM 97.1.
Although McNeil has a long history of altercations with colleagues at other stations throughout his colorful career, up to now there hadn’t been any reports of bad behavior since he joined The Drive last year. Continue reading →

Now she’s back as a per-diem news reporter for CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2. A 2011 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Victory most recently was a reporter and fill-in news anchor at WITC, the Fox affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut. Greg Solk, a Chicago radio legend and one of the industry’s most successful and respected programming executives for nearly four decades, has been forced out as senior vice president of programming and operations at Hubbard Radio.
The surprise move was confirmed Tuesday by Drew Horowitz, president and chief operating officer of Hubbard Radio, who called it “a senior management decision to make a structural change.” Horowitz said he and Ginny Morris, chair and CEO of Hubbard Radio, met with Solk earlier in the day to finalize his departure, which was effective immediately. The Chicago Headline Club honored independent journalist Jamie Kalven on Friday night for his diligent work in uncovering and pursuing the story of Laquan McDonald, the 17-year-old African American fatally shot by a Chicago police officer in 2014.
Kalven was named winner of the Watchdog Award for Excellence in Public Interest Reporting at the group’s 39th annual Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism. Judges said “Sixteen Shots,” Kalven's article for slate.com, “demonstrated investigative persistence that led to the truth in the death of Laquan McDonald.” Continue reading →

Media colleagues from all over Chicago came together Thursday night to honor Carol Marin and Don Moseley on the opening of the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence at DePaul University. The nationally acclaimed reporter-and-producer team, who’ve been teaching at DePaul since 2003, will serve as co-directors of the new center in the College of Communication. “We plan to be a bridge for our students from the classroom to the working newsrooms of the world,” Marin told the gathering. “We’ll also work to be a bridge from DePaul to the larger university and to the community, bringing journalists’ voices to campus to focus on the burning issues and the headlines and the things that are behind the headlines.” Marin and Moseley will begin teaching Advanced Reporting in the fall quarter.
