Kate Grossman resigned Thursday as deputy editorial page editor of the Sun-Times to join the University of Chicago Institute of Politics as a director.

Grossman, who completed a fellowship at the institute earlier this year, will return to become part of the leadership team. Starting September 15, her main responsibility will be overseeing the fellowship program, which was founded at U. of C. in 2013 by David Axelrod.

Her position at the Sun-Times is expected to be filled.

In addition to her duties with the institute, Grossman said she also hopes to squeeze in some teaching and freelance writing.

“I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter and working with the dynamic and passionate group at the IOP, but I am sad to leave the Sun-Times,” she said. “I've loved working here, especially the last seven on the editorial board. Editorial page editor Tom McNamee has been an amazing colleague and friend, and I'll miss working with him and all the exceptional journalists at the paper.”

A graduate of Cornell University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Grossman previously was a reporter for the Associated Press and the Providence Journal in Providence, Rhode Island. She joined the Sun-Times in 2000, specializing in coverage of Chicago’s public housing and schools, and was named deputy editorial page editor in 2008.

In 2010 Grossman received the Studs Terkel Community Media Award from the Community Media Workshop.
