Will Jack Diamond’s weeklong fill-in stint at WLS FM 94.7 lead to a permanent gig? We’ll soon find out.

After five days on the Cumulus Media classic hits station, Diamond headed back Friday to his hometown of Washington, D.C. By all accounts, his on-air audition alongside current morning host Brant Miller and news anchor Marti Jones was deemed a success.

“Everybody felt great about it,” said Jan Jeffries, senior vice president of corporate programming for Cumulus Media and program director of WLS FM.

Ever since Cumulus Media made an unsuccessful run at Ed Volkman and Joe Colborn (the duo known as Eddie & Jobo), it’s been clear the station’s morning show was due for a shakeup. Jeffries said he turned to Diamond because “it seemed like it would be fun to put him in with Brant for a week.” Insiders said the arrangement could become permanent, with Diamond as host and Miller in a reduced role as co-host and weather reporter.

Diamond last worked for Jeffries in Washington at WRQX, which cut Diamond after 26 years as morning personality in April 2013. The two have been friends since they worked together in the ’80s at the former WQXI FM in Atlanta.

For his part, the veteran broadcaster seemed delighted to be here. “A truly great experience hanging out with and working with some of the nicest and most talented people in our business at WLS Chicago,” Diamond wrote on Facebook. “Thanks for the warm welcome, hospitality and friendship, guys!!! 94.7 WLS-FM still and forever 'The ROCK of Chicago!' "

On Twitter he added: “Amazing city, truly great radio station, some of the best people & personalities in the business = blast!”
