“The marriage of GTCR and Mr. Michaels seemed like an odd pairing from the start,” Crain’s Chicago Business reported in September 2012. “GTCR, the city's second-biggest private equity firm after Madison Dearborn LLC, is led by prominent Chicagoans such as Bruce Rauner, while Mr. Michaels exited as CEO of Tribune Co. in 2010 following allegations of mismanagement.”

Rauner retired from GTCR in October 2012. He announced his candidacy for governor in June 2013.
